JAMMIN IN UPSTATE NY

Free Grass Union is a progressive string band, stemming from New York. They are known for their exciting and imaginative spin on traditional bluegrass music. Their genre-defying music has spread throughout the East Coast of the United States and continues to spark the attention of audiences every time they play. Born on Long Island, New York in the winter of 1999, Free Grass Union has spun it’s new sound of old time music for over a decade and counting. The term “Free Grass” is a moniker for the band’s genre-defying music, with a deep-rooted foundation in bluegrass and folk. Listeners of Free Grass Union will hear a blend of musical influences ranging from jazz, funk and psychedelic, woven into acoustic americana. The band’s essence lies in their heartfelt songwriting performed with technical prowess by Greg Butler (Mandolin/Vocals), Kim Humphrey (Guitar/Vocals), Mitch Erdman (Upright Bass.) Since Free Grass Union hit the scene, they quickly became an integral part of the Northeast music and arts festival circuit. FGU has made regular appearances at festivals including NY Harvest Festival & Freedom Fair, The (Austin Memorial) Dam Show, The Long Island Bluegrass Festival, Sterling Stage String Fling, and various Groovelink and Jibberjazz productions. Free Grass Union has performed at stages across the region, including theaters, fairs and fests, galleries, private events, and even a Hobo Homecoming in 2007. Aside from headlining many gigs, FGU has shared the stage with The David Grisman Quintet, Ricky Scaggs & Kentucky Thunder, Jonathan Edwards, The Wailers, Rusted Root, JGB, DJ Logic, KRS1, and many other talented artists.
